Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones comes in defense of Jerry Jones’ all-in comment amid heavy criticism from fans
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

When the Dallas Cowboys started the offseason after the tragic playoff elimination in 2023, Jerry Jones lit a light of hope in the fans’ hearts as he claimed the franchise was ‘all-in’ with the offseason plans. However, the Cowboys have been the least active team throughout the offseason– losing many prospective deals in the process.

With everyone happening, Dallas fans have been processing all their heat towards its owner, Jerry, who remained silent in free agency even though many prominent players had shown interest in playing for the Cowboys. But Jones has not only received criticisms from fans but also from analysts.

While talking on the matter, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones came in defense of Jerry, explaining the reason behind Jerry’s silence. In a conversation with 105.3 The Fan, Stephen added that the franchise is “aware” of the frustrations that the fans have been enduring.

I know where the frustration is: It’s the fact that we haven’t had success in the playoffs to their satisfaction. Until we do that, then the criticism is certainly something that’s going to be there. We know that’s going to be there, but we’re going to stick with what we believe will ultimately get us a championship here for our fans. We don’t define ‘all in’ by what you spend in free agency. It’s keeping the core [together]. Stephen Jones said

Stephen Jones on Cowboys’ strategy to prioritize core players over free-agency splurges

The Cowboys haven’t made a splashy free-agency signing since 2012 and they remain following the same M.O. All they have done so far is bargain signings with their existing players, much like what is happening with its three top players– Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, and CeeDee Lamb

The Cowboys executive VP reasoned the offseason silence with the franchise’s plan to re-sign their top players.

But when you're wanting to sign players like Dak [Prescott] and Micah [Parsons] and CeeDee [Lamb], then you have to hold money back if you want to have a realistic chance of signing those guys. Stephen Jones added

Moreover, he attempted to give a new perspective to the fans, highlighting that it’s a good thing the Cowboys do not wish to sign additional players to improve the roster. As it shows how well the franchise drafts the players firsthand.
