Colts cut two, show zero tolerance for gambling violators

The NFL suspended cornerback Isaiah Rodgers and defensive end Rashod Berry indefinitely on Friday for violating the league’s gambling policy — a punishment only made worse when both players were released by the Indianapolis Colts after the suspensions were announced.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard later released a statement explaining why Rodgers and Berry were no longer members of the team.

"[They were released] as a consequence of the determination that these players violated the league's gambling policy," Ballard said. "The integrity of the game is of the utmost importance. As an organization we will continue to educate our players, coaches, and staff on the policies in place and the significant consequences that may occur with violations."

Rodgers and Berry can apply for reinstatement after the 2023 season. Many players have expressed disappointment with the NFL via social media for levying such harsh penalties for gambling while also making money off of sports-betting partnerships.

ESPN reported on Thursday that Rodgers won a $1,000 prop bet on the over/under for rushing yards by a Colts running back last season — an explicit violation of the NFL’s policy that states players cannot bet on NFL games.

Rodgers had 34 tackles and three passes defensed in 15 games last season while playing 283 coverage snaps. He was expected to be a key contributor for a young Colts secondary that features six rookies and doesn’t have a player over the age of 27.

Rodgers and Berry are two of nine players suspended in 2023 for violating the gambling policy. Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams, Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney were the only players on an NFL roster who weren’t cut after being suspended.
