Yankees Place Star Reliever on IL
USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees have lost a key piece of their bullpen.

On Sunday, the Yankees placed reliever Ian Hamilton on the 15-day injured list with a groin strain.

This is the same groin injury that caused Hamilton to miss time earlier in the season. Hamilton was out for over a month with this injury.

Manager Aaron Boone says they're hoping Hamilton can return this season, but there is a chance that his year is over.

If his season is indeed over, it was an exceptional one for the righty. In 35 appearances, Hamilton posted a 2.24 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 64 strikeouts across 52.1 innings.

Hamilton, 28, does not reach arbitration until 2026, so the Yankees have him under cheap control for a number of years.

After the season he put together in 2023, Hamilton figures to fit into the fold of the Yankees' future bullpen for many years to come.

With Hamilton going on the IL, the Yankees called up pitcher Greg Weissert.
