David Leitch's The Fall Guy premiered at SXSW last night, and the first reactions are dropping.
Starring Ryan Gosling as stuntman Colt Seavers, The Fall Guy follows him fresh off an almost career-ending accident and on a mission to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job.
Leitch's hook is that he is both a stuntman and a director. His reimagining of the hit 1980s TV series is said to be his most personal film yet, and the first reactions to the film reflect his passion.
The first public opinion, however, was that of Steven Spielberg, who told Gosling he loved the film. Gosling said it didn't matter what happens now, but critics and moviegoers are getting their hands on the film, and here's what they had to say.
Shamelessly romantic about the movies, love, and especially stunt work, THE FALL GUY is Hollywood action spectacle at its badass best. Hilarious and swoon-worthy. Blunt and Gosling shine like the white-hot movie stars they are. 10/10 Taylor Swift needle drop. #SXSW pic.twitter.com/YbUiq39ijV

Three closest thing Gosling has done to The Nice Guys, this action comedy is a love letter to stuntmen and a charmingly old fashioned romantic date movie. Mainly a showcase for Gosling’s movie star charms, but Hannah Waddingham is having the time of her life. #SXSW pic.twitter.com/bZqnGaQxro
THE FALL GUY is what we love to see in a big action romcom and further showcases why comedic Ryan Gosling never disappoints. His chemistry with Emily Blunt is electric. The stunt work is outstanding. This acts as, not only, a celebration to stuntmen, but a crew as a whole. #SXSW pic.twitter.com/5bTbO0AzSZ

THE FALL GUY is a silly unapologetic celebration of crew. The idea that thousands of talent (who are easily overlooked) can help make a crazy project come true and make new dreams for filmmakers. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are dynamite. The stunts are absolutely wonderful #SXSW pic.twitter.com/6UjXr4BP0t

The Fall Guy is pure adrenaline from start to finish! The stunts are absolutely insane, as they should be. Ryan Gosling & Emily Blunt have great chemistry but its the humor & needledrops that make this something special. Best use of Taylor Swift's All Too Well! #TheFallGuy #sxsw pic.twitter.com/4niKSa0aKH

THE FALL GUY: The kind of phenomenally entertaining movie that you leave excited to see again. Gosling and Blunt have SO much charm and, of course, the stunt work rocks through. Just as fun as you want it to be and then some.

THE FALL GUY is fantastic! The action is great, Blunt & Gosling have amazing chemistry, and it's hysterically funny! The Fall Guy is a must-see that I would recommend this to absolutely anyone!

I found a new favorite comedy I can't wait to rewatch over and over #SXSW2024 pic.twitter.com/XBlC7Qu5Lr
First opinions say The Fall Guy is a hit, and there's a little something in there for Taylor Swift fans, too, as it appears her song "All Too Well" makes the cut.
Joining Gosling in the cast are Emily Blunt, Hannah Waddingham, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu and Winston Duke, written by Hobbs & Shaw screenwriter Drew Pearce.
The early reactions out of SXSW will have to tide fans over for now, as The Fall Guy doesn't hit theaters until May 3.
